Exclusive podcast with Dr. Michael Barbour, Release of the State of Online Learning in Canada Report

PodcastMichael K. Barbour is an Associate Professor of Instructional Design for the the College of Education and Health Services at Touro University, California in Vallejo. He has been involved with K-12 distance, online and blended learning for almost two decades as a researcher, evaluator, teacher, course designer and administrator.

Dear Thought Leader,

On the eve of Canada’s 150th anniversary we’re thrilled to launch our 9th Canada’s Classroom of the Future Challenge! We are inviting teachers and students to share their vision of a ‘future ready’ classroom to qualify and WIN 1 of 3 makerspace prize packages.

2017 also marks another important milestone–my 20th year in EdTech and launching TLC School Canada! I will be blogging about my experiences. Perhaps there’s a book in the making! Most importantly, I’ve never been more passionate about learning and innovation and continuing to make an impact on a national scale through MindShare Learning and C21 Canada. I often say these days, it’s never been a more exciting time to be in education!

Watch for our “NEW” and “Improved” MindShare Report next month as we also celebrate our 10th anniversary of our eMag! A reader survey is also forthcoming.

Canada made its mark at the Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC) in Orlando last week! The more I immerse myself in EdTech, the clearer I see it’s about people, community and tech-infused pedagogy; partly inspired by my time at FETC. With over 200 Canadians in attendance, MindShare was thrilled to once again partner with LRP conference ownership as a media partner. Some 100 education and technology leaders attended our memorable CanAm Celebration of Excellence Partnering reception. Special thanks to sponsors of our CanAm: LRP, Hapara, Acumen Partners and West Corp. Be sure to checkout FETC highlights and an exclusive podcast with Peter Singh, Toronto District School Board, CTO, who provides a Canadian perspective on the FETC conference.

I trust you’ll enjoy this special Online Learning Edition, Cross Canada spotlight on the highly innovative province of Saskatchewan. Perhaps a well kept secret; however, it’s home to some amazing ed tech leaders; Kathy Cassidy, Couros brothers (George and Dr. Alec), Dean Shareski, Dr. Guy Tetrault (Be sure to check out his podcast!) and Shelley Wright.

Special thanks to our readers, partners, sponsors, advisory board members and our team. It truly takes a digital village to create a community of leaders and learners in the 21st century.

Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep!

P.S. Be sure to mark your calendars for this Fall’s 8th Canadian EdTech Leadership Summit at MaRsDD, Monday, November 6, 2017

Canada 150 Classroom of the Future Challenge Launches!

Exclusive Blog with Last year’s Classroom of the Future Eastern winner Sadie Bradbury, Highland Park Junior High on her insights with creating a winning video & the positive impact the contest had on her students.

So, we won the Eastern Makerspace! When my principal walked into my science room and handed me her cell phone, and Robert Martellacci was on the other end, speakerphone engaged, Highland Park technology changed.

The impact was almost immediate, our students were thrilled and amazed and so very happy. Many had doubts when we said we were going to try the competition, and this really changed attitudes, that their small population competing against other larger schools in Canada could actually win a competition! When the students asked what we had won, the belief in their abilities grew, as did their confidence and their joy. This was an amazing gift in itself, the school started with minimal technology and we now were moving into the future of technology!

The Microsoft Education Transformation Corner

Step 4: Personalized Learning

When you visualize educational transformation, what does success look like to you? How do you get there? One major component of transformation is the focus on Personalized Learning – a popular buzzword in the education space, and for good reason. According to the OECD, Personalized Learning has the potential to overcome the socio-economic, time, and space limitations of traditional learning. So how have you and your school system been thinking about Personalized Learning?

Education Transformation Framework

Personalized Learning is not a new concept, despite its current spotlight. The difference is that technology is now allowing for seamless change and transformation to occur within our education systems. With today’s technology, schools and educators around the globe can design customizable learning pathways for students and offer data-rich feedback cycles for teachers.

MindShare Musings

Given this month’s focus on Online Learning, I’d be remissed if I didn’t share this fantastic online webinar series link now archived offered through Teach Online, courtesy of our colleagues at ContactNorth. Teaching in a Digital Age is another fantastic resource by Dr. Tony Bates, visiting scholar to ContactNorth.

FREE of Charge!

On a sad note….Dr. David Bell, former Dean of the faculty of education, York University, a former colleague and squash buddy of mine passed away recently. David was a friend and mentor, who I collaborated with through Learning for a Sustainable Future. He was truly a champion on the court and in life.  He pursued his passion for the environment and made a point of reminding me to keep environmental issues on my radar as we pursue C21 Canada innovative partnerships.

Professor Emeritus
Former Dean, 1992-1996

Following an excellent online board meeting for the Digital Human Library, my colleague Terry GodWaldt, Executive Director, Centre for Global Education shared a few updates below. He continues to do amazing work on a global scale from his school in the Edmonton School board. You are an inspiration to all of us. And a case study in thinking BIG! Congrats!

1) UN Climate Change piece,, (10,000 youth, 25,000 hours, 16 countries, 6 countinents) – Full description on the first page of the paper. It is the world’s largest synthesis of youth opinion on Climate Change.

2) National Vimy event – working with the Canadian Armed Forces, under the leadership of BGeneral Simon Hetherinton, the International Duke of Edinburgh award and Her Honour, Lt Governor Mitchell, we will be sending a team  to Vimy Ridge in France from April 1-7th. During the trip they are going to create a video, telling the story of the troops time in France, and the impact on local communities. The video will be shown at the Canadian War Museum on Nov 11, as part of the Remembrance Day ceremony taking place there.  They will also be connecting back to Canada for the National Vimy Ridge Virtual Commemorative Video Conference, on April 6th, with ten of thousands of Canadian youth, from Coast to Coast to Coast.

We are hosting both projects.

3) UN Climate Change 2017 – same as number 1 except now we have over 100k and it will tell the story of Climate Change on global indigenous communities. As part of this, we have a virtual reality going to every continent on earth to create tours of holy indigenous sites, narrated by native indigenous peoples, telling the story of climate change on their traditional lifestyles.

I enjoyed the opportunity to speak virtually at the Pepperdine U Sharks Tank competition Masters in Learning Technology and participate on the panel. Special thanks to Dr. Paul Sparks, program chair and former MindShare Report advisory board member.

Be sure to share you latest news and upcoming events with us! We enjoy hearing from you! Until next time, keep the digital learning curve steep! R.M.
